Pull the right book to enter Perth’s newest speakeasy cocktail and jazz bar!
It’s been a year of quirky and fun new bars around Perth in 2021. From those hidden behind fake convenience store fridges, to disco clubs found deep within bars, it would appear we like our Friday night drinks to come with a sense of mystery and fun.
Taking its name from Andrew Volstead, the man responsible for penning the United States’ infamous National Prohibition Act Of 1920, you can find The Volstead Lounge near Shafto Lane in the CBD (taking up residence in the old Laneway Lounge).
And while Convenients brings the down and dirty rock’n’roll vibes of a proper dive bar, Director Matt Hatton is keeping it charming and sophisticated at The Volstead Lounge – opting for an opulent but welcome jazz and cocktail bar. Hidden behind a room dressed up as Volstead’s study, you’ll need to find the right book on the shelf to get access to the fun inside!
There you’ll enjoy a curated cocktail list of classics alongside a few imaginative concoctions like a Charcoal Tommy and Smoked Verrazano, along with a shared dish menu featuring such treats as a 90-day butter aged ribeye with chimichurri and smoked duck fat potatoes; skirt steak tacos with burnt corn and charred pear and pomegranate salsa; and a pulled pork jaffle served with coleslaw and house-made apple sauce.
As he has done with Convenients, supporting live music artists is a big focus for Hatton, and from Thursday to Saturday you’ll catch a rotating lineup of live music and cabaret entertainment, marking this to place to be a roaring (20s) night of fun and frovility.
